Welcome to the summer term!

Dear Parents / Carers,

Welcome to the summer term! We have had a brilliant first week back. The class have made me feel very welcome already and I do hope that they are feeling settled with their new teacher. I look forward to getting to know all of the children in Meerkats class very well.

Curriculum

Our topic this half term is Gardener’s World, so we will be learning all about plants and linking our writing to traditional tales like Jack and the Beanstalk. We have a school focus on number sense this half term and so we will be improving mental maths skills and our use of the four operations. We will also be focussing on consolidating our learning so far and improving our writing skills before moving in to Year 2.

Spellings

Spellings will be a little different this half term. A spelling test will still continue to take place every Wednesday but the focus will be upon high frequency words which the children are expected to read and write by the end of Year 1. Meerkats can already read and write many of these words. Amongst the 100 words, we will test the children on 10 every week at random to assess their spelling of these words. We will also be focussing our learning on these words to improve our independent writing skills in class. Please help your child to practice these spellings as much as possible. I have attached a list of the words and ideas of how to practice the words.

Reading books

If possible children should read their books with an adult every night. Please remember to write a comment in their reading record each time you listen to them so that we can identify any areas for development. In preparation for Year 2 we would like the children to take a little more responsibility with their reading books by independently placing them in a basket to be changed in the morning, instead of an adult checking for them during the day. Please help us to achieve this by reminding your child to do this if they need a new book.

Other notes

Our two P.E. sessions will continue to be on Monday and Wednesday. Please ensure that any earrings are removed and long hair is tied back.

Our library session will be on Wednesday afternoon. All library books will need to be returned on the same day so that new books can be issued.

Please note that all water bottles should be filled each morning with still water only.

Feel free to talk to me regarding any queries or concerns you may have.

Kind regards

Miss Norman

To help your child learn the trickier words, you could use the look, cover, say, write method; create a word search together; say simple sentences to be written using the words; or play hangman.
