Phonics

Read, Write, Inc is our school’s Systematic Phonics Programme.  It is an inclusive programme with a clear aim that all children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 learn to read. The Read, Write, Inc sessions take place every day as the continuity and pace of the programme is key to accelerating the progress of children’s reading development.

Pupils are grouped following half termly assessments so that they learn to read the sounds and words suited to their reading ability. These assessments are carried out by our Reading Lead using the Read Write Inc online assessments. 

The activities in RWI lessons are split into two sections: Speed Sounds Lessons and Storybook Lessons. Speed Sound Lessons teach and practice sound recognition, decoding, speeding up word reading and segmenting. Storybook lessons then apply this knowledge with an appropriate and decodable text, focusing more on fluency and comprehension skills.
